Muster the Legions
When we found out about the new Necron kits at the weekend, us guys in the web team dived into the Codex to find out more about them - how they worked, what they do in games, and how they will fit with the rest of your Necron collection. Throughout the week we'll be taking a look at each of the new units and telling you more about them (much like the Triarch Stalker earlier), but for now we thought it would be a good idea to see how they fit into a Necron army.
A 1000-point Necron army:
You don't get a vast number of Necrons for 1000 points, but it's enough to wreck considerable havoc on the battlefield. The Necron Battleforce provides the core to the army and with the addition of a Necron Overlord on a Command Barge you have a pretty solid start to an army. Give the Overlord a few tasty bits of wargear, or build the Ghost Ark as a Doomsday Ark, and you'll have around 850 points of Necrons ready to make war. That leaves you with 150 points - just the right amount for one Triarch Stalker, three Necron Wriaths, six Tomb Blades or three Tomb Spyders (or three Tomb Blades and one Tomb Spyder if you feel like creating a well-mixed Necron cocktail). You could even substitute the Necron Lord for Nemesor Zahndrekh, Vargard Obyron or Illuminator Szeras if you so desire.
A 1500-point Necron army:
An extra 500 points gives you a great opportunity to add a few more nasty units to your legions of metal warriors. The Battleforce still provides a great start to the army, and the Command Barge is a great way to get a commander (or a really large gun if you prefer excessive firepower to a futuristic anti-grav chariot). A Monolith gives you some extreme firepower and, along with the Triarch Stalker and the Doomsday Ark, you should be able to deal with any enemy vehicles. The Triarch Praetorians/Lychguard Provide excellent close combat support, leaving you with around 100 points to spend on Tomb Blades, Wraiths or, my personal favourite, Canoptek Spyders. With three vehicles in the army, Canoptek Spyders are a great way to ensure that they continue functioning right up to the end of the battle.
*As a side note, consider taking Illuminator Szeras in the army if you can squeeze him in. His Mechanical Augmentation special rule gives him the ability to upgrade a unit of Necron Warriors or Immortals, making them far more powerful than normal. Considering there are 20 Necron Warriors and 5 Immortals in the army, he's got more than enough test subjects to experiment on.
