Let them eat cake.
As we all know, in the grim darkness of the far future there is only war. And apparently cake, too. Last weekend we celebrated Warhammer 40,000's 25th anniversary and thousands of you swamped our Hobby Centres to join in with all the activities. There was a one day painting contest in Games Workshop Manchester, an Apoclaypse battle in Drakenburg, a mega-tournament in Seattle, and a roadblock in Stockholm. In fact, there was so much going on we just don't have space to look at it all, so we thought we'd focus on the cakes for a change - the unsung heroes of any great party. Everything from the classic Victoria sponge to the apple tart (with candles) made an appearance, including brownies, cookies, gâteaux, and many other icing-covered delights. There really is nothing like a good bit of cake...
Joshua Cope sent us a whole host of pictures from Games Workshop Stoke, where they had a whole army of cakes battle it out to see which one was the most delicious. Ironically, the one that got destroyed first was the winner. We particularly liked the Ork Cake, which was undercoated with green icing and highlighted with a mix of green and white food colouring. The freehand detail was applied using a fine detail piping gun.
At Games Workshop Plaza in London, this super-heavy tank was seen roaming the battlefields in search of prey. Unlike conventional battlecakes, this one was made of a chocolate crispy compound, making it very resilient to enemy attack (it's Armour 14 all round). The quad Twixcannon (other biscuit-based cannons are available) proved particularly devastating in the following Apocalypse match.
These caketanks suffered mercilessly at the hands of the enemy. The one on the right appears to be of Tyranid origin judging by the green insides, which means it was probably a monstrous creaturecake. The glorious Ultracake on the left appears to have suffered an immobilised result, but that's nothing a Techmarine with some icing couldn't fix...
Incidentally, we didn't have any cake at all here in the web team, so if you're feeling generous and you fancy sharing some of your baked goods, then make sure you send it in to us, we'll gladly put it to good use.
