Taking on the Golden Demon
For some of us, the Golden Demon awards is one of the biggest events of the painting calendar, when we pitch our artistic skills against those of like-minded hobbyists. Last year at Games Day UK, several thousand entries made their way to the Golden Demon stands - a real hobby feast for anyone that attended the day. In fact, you can even see the winners in the Golden Demon gallery, which has a button on the right hand side of the blog over there →
What we really wanted to show off today though, was a collection of awesome models painted by Aidan Daly, who entered the Golden Demon awards last year, but sadly got pipped to the post on several occasions. However, we thought his entries were so good that we decided to show them off on the blog along with a couple of his latest creations. Here's Aidan to tell you more about his models:
Aidan: I painted the Archon for Golden Demon 2011. Originally he was going to have a retinue of Incubi, but time got the better of me, so into the Warhammer 40,000 Single Miniature category he went! I was very pleased (and pleasantly surprised) to get a Finalist pin for him.
The Chaos Sorcerer [a previous Games Day Miniature - Dan] was painted way back in 2010. The idea behind this piece was that the Winds of Magic are changing him as he is casting his spell - his tabard changing from blue to purple to yellow, and the very rock he's standing on changing into some kind of arcane metal.
Griff Oberwald was also painted for Golden Demon 2011, and he got me a finalist pin as well - very pleasing considering I only finished him the night before Games Day!
The Necron was painted for an interview I had for 'Eavy Metal in November. Unfortunately I didn't get the job, but I did get some great feedback from them which has only spurred me on to try again in the future.
The Nurgle Lord was painted using some of the feedback I got from Joe Tomaszewski in the 'Eavy Metal interview. The snow was made using bicarbonate of soda mixed with PVA glue, the skin was painted with a basecoat of Tallarn Flesh shaded with Leviathan Purple, Liche Purple and Scab Red, and highlighted by adding progressive amounts of Rotting Flesh and Skull White.
Dan: Incidentally, there is actually a Trainee Figure Painter Vacancy in the 'Eavy Metal team at the moment, so if anyone is interested in applying, then simply follow this link. On another note, if you do want to apply to 'Eavy Metal in the future, you can always send them an email. Don't forget to include some good pictures of your models to show them!
