Warriors of Chaos; Citadel Painting Essentials
To accompany the release of the Mega Paint Set, Adam Troke has put together this Citadel Painting Essentials article, which looks at the contents of the set and how to get the most out of the Citadel paint range. Adam has included a range of examples and guides and the article is well worth a read, even if you've been painting for some time. I found his explanation of staining particularly enlightening.
Excited by my expanded painting knowledge, I decided to go and find some great painted miniatures to show you. I didn't have to wander far before I spotted Nick Cristofoli's Warriors of Chaos army. Nick has been painting miniatures for a long, long time (I think it was called daubing back when he started) and his Chaos army is beautifully painted. It is also full of conversions - in fact there's hardly a model Nick hasn't remodelled in some way.
Here's a look at six Nick's most interesting units:
-
Notice the Chaos Warrior on the left who has been given a scythe from the Vampire Counts Zombie set and a shield from the Marauder kit. The model also has a converted head that Nick made by removing the spikes from the side of the helmet and gluing one onto the front.
-
Nick converted the Mordheim Plague Cart to use as a Chaos Chariot. He has replaced the enclosed part of the cart with parts from the old Siege Mantels set. The crewman has been converted from the Mordheim Carnival of Chaos Strongman miniature and Nick has filled the area under him with Zombie and Skeleton parts.
-
Another of Nick's chariots, this one uses the Snotling Pump Wagon as its base and is pulled by the old Beast of Nurgle. Nick has used the Champion of Nurgle and the mounted Lord of Nurgle to make the crew, with some Chaos Warrior legs. The harness is from the old Galloper Gun set and the spikes are all from the Chaos Tank Accessories frame.
-
This model uses the Bretonnian Grail Reliquary as its base. Nick removed the heads of the bearers and replaced them with Zombie heads. The rider is the Lord of Nurgle who has been given the staff from an old Sorcerer, and the head from the Dark Master model. Notice the skeleton horse parts Nick has added in place of the reliquary.
-
Karenin Maggotkin is the general of Nick's army. He has been modelled from Crom the Conquerer - Nick has removed the shield and swapped the head for the head of the Nurgle Champion. The palanquin he's stood on is an old Nurgle one that Nick has added extra Nurglings to.
-
Nick mixed pieces from the Chaos Marauder set and Zombie sets to denote his Marauder unit as having the mark of Nurgle. For his second and subsequent ranks he's mounted his Marauders on regiment bases, to make set-up and casualty removal easier.
