Goodbye 2011, we hardly knew ye.
Do you ever get to the end of a year and suddenly wonder where it went? Yeah, me too. This year, my first working for the Games Workshop Web Team, has disappeared faster than a squad of Guardsmen confronted with a massive mob of Orks - I really have no idea where it has gone. So today I'm going back through the year's blog posts to relive some of those classic moments. Here are our top 10 blog posts of the year as voted for by you, the citizens of the Imperium (ie: the general public), when you clicked the Facebook 'Like' button in the top corner of each post. So, let's begin:
-
Did you know that It's not all Boltgun Metal? Well in our 10th spot we decided to paint a few Necrons to celebrate their release in November, but we weren't allowed to use Boltgun Metal - a colour that's became synonymous with Necrons over the last few years. Instead, we went for blues, reds, blacks, and a rather fetching marbled bone effect (if I do say so myself).
-
In at number 9 is Jes Goodwin's Sketches of Pain, which featured an in-depth chat with Jes over the design of the new Dark Eldar Talos. Not only is Jes a very talented sculptor, but he's also very good at drawing too, and there are plenty of annotated sketches in this post to show the design process that Jes went through to get to the final kit.
-
In at number 8 is Lewis Clarke's Ogre army. I remember when I first saw these Ogres in our Inbox and I was utterly blown away. Over the following weeks, Lewis sent more and more pictures to us, along with plenty of information about how he painted and converted them. For me, this is what the hobby is all about - a beautifully painted and personalised army ready for war.
-
Taking spot number 7 is The Flesh is Weak, a stunning Iron Hands army my Nick Kay that we only showed off a couple of weeks ago (if that!). Much like Lewis' army above, we were stunned into silence by the level of work that Nick had put into his army - it really is a great example of what you can achieve when you put your mind to it.
-
In 6th place are the Blood Wolves, an army painted by our very own Christian Byrne. Christian is well-renowned for his exceptional painting, and his armies have appeared in the pages of White Dwarf many times over the years. Check out the stunning freehand work on his vehicles and the sinister glow on his power weapons - very inspirational.
-
With only one more Facebook 'Like' than Christian's Blood Wolves, our post about playing Dreadfleet took spot number 5. Until this post, the Dreadfleet game was still somewhat of a mystery to most people - how did you play it, what does everything do? Bobby Mahogany, our ship's rudder, caught up with Phil Kelly to play through a full turn of the game.
-
And, speaking of Phil, it's his Dark Eldar army in their cybergoth attire that take position number 4. Phil will normally build an army for every Codex or Army Book that he writes, and with the Dark Eldar he choose to paint his army in a very bright (make sure you've got your sunglasses on), almost luminescent orange. It's got be seen to be believed.
-
In at number 3 we had a very eclectic mix of hobby to show off. Headlining the post was Matt Lewis' Dark Eldar (more Dark Eldar? Damn their popularity...) which we found in our Flickr pool. Matt's simple, but stunning, paintjob caught our eye immediately and it wasn't long before they hit the blog. We then followed them up with a couple of stunning Tomb Kings, which were followed in turn by a small teaser trailer for the soon-to-be-re-released Necrons.
-
So, it's down to the final two, and in at number 2 is The Crusader and the Psyker, which features two fantastic armies by Matthias Matzke and Claus Berthelsen. As soon as we saw them we knew that they had to be featured on the blog and within a couple of days we'd got back in touch with both of them to find out more about their armies. Mattias's Drednoughts and Claus' Dreadknights were easily the stars of the show, both of them proving very popular both here in the office and on Facebook.
-
And, in 1st place is How to Roll Citadel Dice. For those of you that haven't read this blog post before, it's all about our latest hobby guide, which we released to help you learn more about rolling dice like a pro. Oh yes, with this guide in your hands, you will never roll 1s again. Well except for Leadership tests, but there's a whole section about training your dice to roll low as well (do you think we'll fool people a second time? Who knows, it's worth a go...).
To round off the day (the week, the month, and the year, in fact), some of you will have noticed a scenery gallery appear on our Facebook page the other day. Well, after many hours of painting, our office scenery collection has now grown somewhat. If you haven't seen the work in progress pictures, then check out the pieces we got finished right here. I'll look to adding a few more to the Facebook gallery in the near future.
Right, that's all from me now. Thank you to everyone that sent us pictures of their models, armies and displays this year - your hard work and hobby dedication have been inspirational to hundreds, if not thousands of people around the world, and we couldn't provide such awesome posts without you. Remember, if you've been working on anything over Christmas and New Year, you can always send pictures in to us at whatsnewtoday@games-workshop.co.uk. On that note, tomorrow also marks the end of our Dreadfleet Painting competition, so if you want to be in with a chance of winning a cool prize then make sure you send in your entries now (for full details of the competition and the terms and conditions, check out this blog post).
I'm off home now for a nice long weekend, but never fear, we'll all be back on Tuesday January 3rd with plenty of awesome hobby goodness for you all to enjoy. Until that time, have a great New Year, build plenty of Citadel Miniatures and don't eat too much cake and turkey (at least not in the same sandwich).
