Throne of Skulls Survival Guide
The Tournament season is once again upon us. For most of us that means the new Throne of Skulls format. Our Throne of Skulls Grand Tournaments are all about having a great time playing one of your favourite games, and being immersed in the hobby for a day or two. The rules system was written by veteran Games Designer Jervis Johnson, here's what he had to say about them:
'Tournaments are not just about fighting battles; there are lots of other things to do as well. They offer an unrivalled opportunity to make new friends and see some really great armies. You're sure to come away with some new ideas for your own collection, and hints and tips on how to achieve the best effects. There are usually plenty of other activities to take part in too. You'll find that a Throne of Skulls Grand Tournament is a fantastic way to celebrate all aspects of the Games Workshop hobby.'
For many, the idea of going to their first tournament can seem like a daunting prospect. So to help, we've put together this quick guide to surviving a tournament. Be sure to click on the images to see more.

You can buy Throne of Skull tickets months in advance, so don't leave painting your army until the night before. If your better-half arranges dinner or a social engagement, they probably won't be too happy if you finish your war machine crew at the table... (Direct your messages of sympathy for Adam's girlfriend here.)

As well as your army, you'll need to take along a copy of the relevant rulebook, army book or codex, as well as a tape measure, dice and templates. Handily, both the Army Figure Case and Figure Case have enough room for your books and gaming aids inside.
-
It's also helpful if you bring along the right army - turning up to a Warhammer 40,000 tournament with a Warhammer army isn't likely to see your crowned champion. Marking your Figure Case in some way will help, but you'll probably be fine if you check which one you've picked up as you leave the house.
-
Grey Knights are awesome warriors, who teleport into battle, their rune-etched armour glowing as the righteous fury in their heart builds to a lethal crescendo; which is all fine and well until they lose their arm just when a force weapon would have come in handy. The odd breakage can happen and it's helpful to have some Super Glue and Plastic Glue on hand to make any repairs.
-
At a Throne of Skulls tournament you'll play five games against five different opponents. It's a great chance to meet new people and make some new friends. Normally Adam wouldn't have picked any of these dubious individuals to spend time with but the common bond of gaming goes along way to off set their obvious strangeness.
-
Finally, the temptation to play to win at all cost can overtake the best of us. However, any unscrupulous play will not earn you many friends and may eventually lead to retribution. If you can't swim I'd be extra friendly just to be on the safe side...
-
The winner of every Throne of Skulls tournament receives this coveted trophy, which depicts the Blood God sat on his mighty throne of skulls.
-
And if you win a Throne of Skulls event at Warhammer World, you'll have your name added to the roll of honour in Bugman's Bar.
You'll always find the latest Throne of Skulls//tournaments tickets in the 'Gaming' section, under 'Games Day and Tournament Tickets'. In fact, there are several Throne of Skull events taking place soon (there's one in Drakenburg, Germany this coming weekend) so if you fancy a weekend of gaming and camaraderie go check out what's happening in your area here.
