New White Dwarf, Daemon Princes
It's new White Dwarf day! It never fails to amaze me what a difference a new copy of White Dwarf makes to the office - we'll all be chatting away, catching up and the like, when Nick appears from the mail room to deliver a box of White Dwarfs. Then there's a split second of silence, followed by a couple of seconds of mad panic as we dash for a copy, and then silence. The office then feels a bit like a library as an eerie hush falls across it. Inevitably though, it doesn't last, and it's not long before the place is abuzz with excited chatter as we discuss the month's articles. New White Dwarf mornings are rather unproductive, it has to be said...
This morning we were mostly discussing Andy Hall's Winds of Magic article, which looks at each of the lores from the Warhammer rulebook and their uses. In his article, Andy asks members of the Studio to name their favourtie lore, and here in the office, we all have ours - Ed loves the Lore of Beasts as its signature spell, Wyssan's Wildform, confers +1 Strength and +1 Toughness, which is useful against any foe and turns your cheap core troops into formidable warriors. I like the Lore of Fire - you can't go wrong with a good old Fireball. I get rather excited in the Magic phase (it's my favourite bit of Warhammer, and wargaming for that matter), and as the Lore of Fire has very direct uses (to blast your opponent to bits) it saves me from having to keep a level head and do anything too clever.
Here's a look at few of our other favourite bits from this month's White Dwarf.

Adam Troke sacrifices his immortal soul to talk to the miniature designers about the new Daemon models. It was particularly interesting to read about how existing models such as the Daemon Prince Be'Lakor influence the design of new models, in this case the new, plastic Daemon Prince.

In 'The Powers of the Warp' article, Phil Kelly offers tips and tactics for gaming with Chaos Daemons. It's an in-depth article full of maps, examples and interesting asides, and should see you most of the way to victory.

Our resident The Lord of the Rings expert Simon Grant looks at using your Heroes in War of the Ring. The section on using Heroes as allies really got me thinking about ways I can increase the effectiveness of my Rohan army.

The new Daemon Prince is a stunning model and this months 'Eavy Metal Masterclass looks at painting such a mighty demi-god. It's the first time the technique of using colour fades (a swish painting technique) has been properly explored and well worth a read no matter what you're currently panting.
You'll be able to pick up your copy of August's White Dwarf from your local Hobby Centre tomorrow or you can order it below and we'll ship it to you on Monday. Don't forget there's free shipping on all orders over £10 or equivalent*, so it's worth picking up something else alongside your White Dwarf.
Seeing as August's White Dwarf is bursting with Daemon content, I thought I'd show you some of the Daemon Princes that have started to materialise around the office.

Jim Lister painted this Daemon Prince to kick off his Daemons of Chaos army. The armour was basecoated with a 1:1 mix of Boltgun Metal and Chaos Black and then washed with Badab Black. Jim then highlighted it with Chainmail and applied a glaze of Chaos Black (to make a glaze mix one part paint with five parts water). Jim basecoated the skin with Chaos Black and washed it with Baal Red. Next, he highlighted it with a mix of 1:2 Chaos Black and Red Gore, and applied four further highlights, each time adding more Red Gore until the mix was 1:6. Finally, he highlighted the muscle edges with Red Gore and then a mix of 1:1 Red Gore and Blood Red. To tie all of the highlights together, Jim washed the skin with a 1:1 mix of Baal Red and water (thinning a wash down stops it overpowering the colours underneath it). I asked Jim if he had anything else to say about the model and he said, 'it's gorgeous, really nice to paint'.

Jim Halton works in the Warhammer World Hobby Centre and painted this Daemon Prince for his Warrior of Chaos army, which is themed around Nurgle. He basecoated the entire model with a mix of 1:1 Orkhide Shade and Rotting Flesh, and highlighted it with a mix of 1:2 Orkhide Shade and Rotting Flesh. The pale areas were then further highlighted with Rotting Flesh and then a 1:1 mix of Rotting Flesh and Bleached Bone. Jim then added a little Skull White to the mix for and applied a final highlight on the muscle edges. The green areas were washed with a mix of 3:1 Thraka Green and Dark Angels Green, and the recesses of the pale areas were washed with a mix of 3:1 Baal Red and Scab Red. Once the model was finished, Jim applied a coat of Purity Seal and then used Gloss Varnish to give the horns, talons and hooves a slick appearance.
If you've painted or modelled anything you're particularly proud of, send us some pictures and I'll feature the best ones here on 'What's New Today'.
Enjoy your weekend.
