Introduction
Sentinels serve as scout units within the Imperial Guard force, searching out enemy formations and engaging high-priority targets with their heavy weapons. Propelled by powerful servo-driven, highly articulated legs, Sentinels can handle almost any type of terrain, coping equally well in jungle environs, wartorn cities or scree-strewn ash wastes. The Sentinel pilot sits within an armoured cockpit where he gains a commanding view of the battlefield, and from his vantage-point he can select the best target for his war machine's armament.
Dependant on factors including combat theatres, the nature of the Sentinel's parent unit and sometimes even the preference of the pilot, Sentinels are designated either as 'scout' or 'armoured' units. Whilst this does little to change the battlefield role of the Sentinel in question (they still rove ahead of the main force, taking on the enemy vanguard), it has some effect on their equipment fit - Armoured Sentinels are significantly better protected, with frontal armour that is proof to small arms fire, while Scout Sentinels are fitted to carry rough-terrain modifications, and feature a open cock-pit to enable the pilot to traverse perilous terrain with ease.
Throughout this article we'll look at how to build this iconic workhorse of the Imperial Guard and how to paint it in the Studio style.
