Introduction
As we mentioned in our guide to building a city, modular designs for your cityscape have several advantages. Ease of storage is one; distribution of the project workload among your gaming group is another. However, the biggest reason to make a modular City of Death is the flexibility it offers for games of Warhammer 40,000. Each cityfight can be played on a different table by switching a few of your building elements around between games.
In the example City of Death we built for this article, we decided to divvy up the work between the four of us on the Black Gobbo crew: Ty Finocchiaro, Ken Kennedy, Bryan Barnes, and Nathan Bishop. We each got to make several 1' x 1' building tiles, while Nathan and Ty made a ton of road sections, rubble piles, and 6" x 12" half-tiles. We even threw in a few moveable catwalks and a landing platform. In the end, we had built and painted (using Ty's quick painting methods) a modular city that completely covered a 4' x 8' board, with a few extra tiles to spare.
This article showcases each building tile we made, along with eight different table layouts just to give you an idea of the possibilities. Hopefully our table's modular flexibility will inspire you to try your own!
